Regulatory history

Why the EPA 608 exam exists

Every question on your Core exam traces back to one of five moments in refrigerant law. Here's the chain that turned "handle refrigerant carefully" into a federal certification requirement.

1987
Montreal Protocol
International treaty to phase out CFCs and other ozone-depleting substances.
1990
Clean Air Act Amendments
Title VI gave the EPA legal authority to regulate ozone-depleting refrigerants.
1994
Section 608 Rule
Created the technician certification program - EPA 608 Core, Type I, II, and III.
2020
AIM Act
Authorized the EPA to phase down HFCs, the refrigerants that don't harm ozone but warm the planet.
Ongoing
HFC Phasedown
The industry's active transition to lower-GWP refrigerants is happening right now.

Frequently Asked Questions

Choosing an exam

Which EPA 608 exam do I need?
Core is required for everyone. Type I covers small appliances, Type II covers high-pressure systems, and Type III covers low-pressure systems. If you work across all three, or aren't sure yet, Universal combines Core with all three types in one certification.
How much time do I need to study?
You don't need to set aside 100 hours. Drills are designed to fit into short study sessions, and missed questions come back over time so you can focus on the topics that still need work.
Are answer explanations included?
Yes. Every question, in every drill and every practice exam, includes a full explanation of the correct answer, so you understand the reasoning, not just whether you got it right.
Is this an official EPA exam?
No. FieldReady Prep is independent exam preparation. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Our practice drills and exams are designed to help you study for the real EPA 608 certification tests, but you must still pass an official proctored exam to become certified.
What if I don't pass the real exam?
Passing a FieldReady Prep practice exam does not guarantee you'll pass the official certification test. If you don't pass, use your dashboard to identify weak categories and continue drilling them. Your access remains active for the full 3-month period so you can keep studying and retake practice exams.
Do I need EPA 608 certification to get an HVAC job?
Many employers require or prefer EPA 608 certification for technicians who work with regulated refrigerants. Requirements vary by job and employer. If you're preparing for EPA 608 and also looking for HVAC job opportunities, findHVACJobs.com can help you explore jobs in the field.
